Difference between Tankless water heaters and Instant water heaters

Tankless water heaters, also known as on-demand water heaters, have become an increasingly popular alternative to traditional storage tank models. Unlike conventional systems that continuously heat and store hot water, tankless units heat water only when needed, providing greater energy efficiency. Their growing popularity is driven by the numerous advantages they offer, including lower energy consumption and reduced utility costs. As homeowners seek more efficient and cost-effective solutions, tankless water heaters are emerging as a smart and innovative choice in modern home appliances.

Size:

Tankless water heaters are generally more compact and sleeker than traditional storage water heaters, making them excellent space-savers. They are ideal for homes with limited space or small bathrooms and can be easily installed inside the bathroom or above false ceilings. Compared to instant water heaters of similar wattage, tankless models are smaller and more versatile. They can also be fitted in tight spaces, such as small enclosures or beneath sinks, in either horizontal or inverted configurations.

Capacity:

Instant water heaters typically include a small tank with a capacity of 1 to 3 liters. Our instant hot water heaters for showers use step-less variable frequency power ranging from 800W to 8500W. The intelligent system adjusts power based on real-time water temperature, temperature difference, and water flow. In summer, the actual working power averages around 3000W, while in winter it increases to approximately 5000–6000W, offering energy efficiency but a relatively low flow rate. In contrast, tankless water heaters operate without a tank and come with higher wattages—from 5 kW up to 24 kW—making them capable of supplying hot water to an entire household.

Heating Process:

Instant water heaters warm water as it passes through the unit using electric heating elements. Tankless water heaters also heat water on demand, but they do so using a heat exchanger. Water circulates through this exchanger, which is electrically heated, ensuring a consistent supply of hot water when needed.

Energy Efficiency:

Tankless water heaters are generally more energy-efficient than instant water heaters because they heat water only when it is needed. In contrast, instant water heaters consume additional energy to heat and maintain the small volume of water stored in their internal tanks, leading to higher overall energy usage.

Cost:

Instant water heaters are usually more affordable upfront compared to tankless models. However, they are less powerful and typically support only one fixture at a time with a low to medium flow rate. Tankless water heaters, while more expensive initially, are built for higher usage and can supply hot water to multiple outlets simultaneously—such as showers, kitchens, and bathtubs—making them a more cost-effective and practical solution for larger households in the long run.

Operation:

Instant water heaters have small capacity tanks with an element fitted that operate based on a thermostat which switches ON/OFF the heating based on set temperature. Tankless water heaters on the other hand operate on the Flow based technology. The unit switches ON when it senses the water flow and switches OFF when there is no water flow.
